                                                               HARRY NABUURS (1929-2015)

Harry Nabuurs- “After the war Harry and his wife Mary emigrated (from Holland) to Canada and eventually to Prince Edward Island. They settled in Montague, established their family farm operation and raised a wonderful family of five sons. We were deeply saddened by Harry’s death on December 17, 2015 but we know that his work will continue to bear fruit.

Harry was well known for his service in the community, his love of the land and his compassion for all of humanity.

His many letters to the public forum of the local newspapers calling for Justice, were based on the principle of the right to life and all that sustains it.

As a volunteer with Development and Peace Harry s love for our sisters and brothers in the Global South was always evident. He knew what liberation was and he longed for others to be liberated. Harry served as Diocesan Chairperson, represented our region on the National Education Committee of Development and Peace and in July 1984 he visited our partners in Nicaragua.( Mary Boyd)

Dr Bud Ings , DVM— veterinarian, author, politician, musician — died Friday in Montague, P.E.I. at the age of 89.

He was the only practising veterinarian in Kings County at the time, and travelled all over the east end of the province in all conditions.

Ings was elected to the legislature in 1970. He was named minister of agriculture in 1974 and health minister in 1978. After the defeat of the government in 1980, Ings returned to practice, founding the Brudenell Animal Hospital.

Ings served on the founding committee for the Atlantic Veterinary College and played a role in the building of Charlottetown's Queen Elizabeth Hospital.(CBC News)

Dr. Thuong Chanh Nguyen

Quebec Area, Operations Branch

Dr. Nguyen has done a considerable amount of work with the Vietnamese community in Quebec to increase the community's awareness of food safety and consumer protection issues. Dr. Nguyen has written a number of articles directed at the Vietnamese community, which have appeared in Quebec publications and pertain to issues such as hamburger disease and other food-borne illnesses and the important of respecting federal laws to protect Canada's natural resources and agri-food industry.

He has received letters of congratulation from his superiors for his role in educating this community and increasing its awareness of the role the CFIA plays in protecting consumers.

Dr. Nguyen's work has enabled the CFIA to reach out and educate the Vietnamese people of Quebec, increasing their awareness of important health issues.

Dr Chanh Nguyen aborde toujours son travail avec le même enthousiasme depuis plus de 21 ans comme inspecteur des viandes pour l'ACIA et Agriculture Canada. Son attitude s'explique peut-être en partie par les nombreuses difficultés qu'il a dû surmonter pour parvenir à ses fins.

À leur arrivée au Canada en 1980 comme réfugiés fuyant l'oppression communiste du Vietnam du Sud, Chanh Nguyen et sa jeune famille n'avaient pour ainsi dire que les vêtements qu'ils portaient et le désir de commencer une nouvelle vie. Les diplômes universitaires que lui et sa femme avaient obtenus au Vietnam n'étaient pas reconnus par le gouvernement canadien de l'époque. Par conséquent, d'abord Chanh puis sa femme sont retournés sur les bancs d'école pour obtenir de nouveau les titres de compétence qu'ils avaient perdus en venant au Canada.

Après quatre années d'études à l'Université de Montréal, Dr Nguyen a pu exercer de nouveau le métier de vétérinaire et il n'a pas tardé à trouver un emploi pour Agriculture Canada comme inspecteur des viandes.

Le travail de vétérinaire au Canada est très différent de celui de vétérinaire au Vietnam, où l'on attache beaucoup plus d'importance aux bovins, à la volaille et aux porcs qu'aux animaux de compagnie. À l'époque, la plupart des vétérinaires du Vietnam travaillaient pour l'État dans différents ministères et directions. Les cliniques privées pour animaux familiers étaient considérées comme un luxe et de ce fait, elles étaient extrêmement rares.

L'adaptation à la vie professionnelle dans un nouveau pays n'a pas été facile et Dr Nguyen considère encore comme difficile l'adaptation aux nouvelles politiques et aux changements continuels touchant les méthodes de travail. Mais c'est un défi qu'il relève avec énergie et dévouement.

Marathonien à ses heures, Chanh Nguyen utilise une partie de son énergie en apparence illimitée pour communiquer à la communauté vietnamienne du Canada de l'information sur la santé et la salubrité des aliments dans sa langue maternelle. Il utilise des documents publics de l'ACIA, de Santé Canada, du US Department of Agriculture, du Center for Disease Control (CDC) et de la US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) et des articles de revues scientifiques crédibles et il les traduit pour différentes revues, sites Web et émissions de télévision vietnamiennes. « Mon objectif, explique Dr Nguyen, est de faire connaître des sujets scientifiques importants à des gens ordinaires, en les présentant de manière qu'ils soient faciles à comprendre pour tous. » Les sujets qu'il choisit comprennent les allergies alimentaires, des conseils et des faits concernant la salubrité des aliments, la rage et l'influenza aviaire, pour n'en citer que quelques-uns.

On dirait que le travail et la détermination sont des caractéristiques communes des membres de la famille Nguyen : l'épouse de Chanh a obtenu de nouveau son diplôme de pharmacienne, sa fille est devenue médecin et son fils est informaticien chez IBM.

Gần đây các tin thời sự nói nhiều về vấn đề sinh sản. Những nước Á châu đang phát triển kinh tế tột bực như Nhật, Đài Loan và Đại Hàn đều gặp phải vấn đề mức sinh sản quá thấp. Phụ nữ các xứ này học càng ngày càng lâu, lập gia đình chậm hoặc từ chối lập gia đình, có con ít hoặc chọn lựa không sinh con cái để tiếp tục sự nghiệp cá nhân, nếp sống tự do không vướng bận con cái, hoặc lo ngại không đủ tiền của để giáo dục nuôi dưỡng một đứa trẻ.

Một nhóm các nhà nghiên cứu vây quanh Keith Thomas, 45 tuổi, và nhìn chằm chằm vào bàn tay phải của ông. “Mở ra nào, mở ra nào, mở ra nào,” họ thúc giục, và reo hò khi những ngón tay của Thomas xòe ra và cuộn lại theo các hình ảnh trên màn hình máy tính. Kể từ khi kết thúc tình trạng khẩn cấp về sức khỏe cộng đồng do COVID-19 vào tháng 5, CDC không còn báo cáo về số ca nhiễm COVID-19 trên toàn quốc. Điều này có nghĩa là các sở y tế của tiểu bang không còn phải báo cáo dữ liệu này cho CDC.

Giác mạc (cornea) là một lớp mô cứng, trong suốt bao phủ phía trước mắt. Nó giúp tập trung ánh sáng vào võng mạc (retina). Nếu giác mạc bị tổn thương do bệnh tật hoặc chấn thương, nó có thể gây ảnh hưởng đến thị lực. Trên toàn thế giới, gần 13 triệu người bị mù do các vấn đề về giác mạc.

Các phòng khám ‘lang băm’ hô hào có bán các liệu pháp tế bào gốc (stem cell therapies) mọc lên nhan nhản khắp mọi nơi. Trên thế giới, có hàng ngàn phòng khám, cơ sở tuyên bố có thể chữa được bách bệnh, từ bệnh tự kỷ cho đến bại não. Những nơi có nhiều ‘phòng khám trị liệu tế bào gốc’ nhất là ở Hoa Kỳ, Mexico, Ấn Độ và Trung Quốc. Rất nhiều người đang đi khắp mọi nơi để tiếp cận những phương pháp điều trị này, dẫn đến một hiện tượng được gọi là du lịch tế bào gốc (stem cell tourism).

Cứ bốn năm ngàn bé trai ra đời là có một bé bị một chứng bệnh di truyền làm chúng bại liệt, yếu dần và tử vong sớm. Ngày 22 tháng 6, 2023 Cơ quan quản trị thực phẩm và thuốc của Hoa Kỳ FDA chuẩn thuận một trị liệu dùng gen (di thể) mới nhất, với giá cao chưa từng thấy là trên 3 triệu đô la cho mỗi liều thuốc (may mắn là chỉ cần một liều duy nhất). Trước hết chúng ta bàn về bệnh này. Tên của bệnh là “loạn dưỡng cơ Duchenne” dịch từ danh từ khoa học quốc tế: tiếng Anh là Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). Duchenne là tên của một bác sĩ chuyên khoa thần kinh tiên phong thế kỷ thứ 18 công bố về bịnh này (sau vài người khác) và bs đầu tiên làm sinh thiết (biopsy) các cơ bắp trong những đứa trẻ bị liệt trong bịnh này.

Một loại thuốc hứa hẹn mới sẽ là phương pháp đầu tiên trên thế giới giúp người lớn có thể mọc lại răng một cách tự nhiên, hoặc giúp trẻ em mắc chứng “anodontia” bẩm sinh có thể mọc răng như bình thường. Nghiên cứu mới do các khoa học gia tại Trường Kyoto và Trường Fukui thực hiện, dẫn đầu bởi Katsu Takahashi. Ông cho biết: “(Phương pháp) làm mọc răng mới là giấc mơ của mọi nha sĩ. Tôi đã nghiên cứu nó từ khi còn là sinh viên. Tôi tin rằng mình có thể làm được điều đó.”

Hiện nay, có khoảng 10% người dân Hoa Kỳ mắc bệnh ù tai (tinnitus) dạng nặng. Chất lượng cuộc sống bị ảnh hưởng nghiêm trọng khi trong tai luôn có tiếng ù ù và o o dù không có bất kỳ tác động nào từ môi trường bên ngoài. Tuy nhiên, giờ đây, những người bị ù tai sẽ có thêm niềm hy vọng, bởi sắp có một phương pháp điều trị kết hợp sử dụng âm thanh và kích thích điện từ.

Trong thời đại khoa học kỹ thuật ngày càng tiến bộ nhanh hơn sự ứng đối của con người như hiện nay không ít người quan ngại về nguy cơ các sản phẩm trí thông minh nhân tạo có thể thoát khỏi tầm kiểm soát của con người. Điều trớ trêu là sự tiến bộ vượt bậc của khoa học kỹ thuật cũng từ con người mà ra. Hay nói cách khác, chính con người là tác nhân của các sản phẩm khoa học kỹ thuật tân tiến đó lại lo ngại tạo vật của mình. Tuy nhiên, thực tế còn có một nghịch lý khác, đó là cho đến ngày nay, con người thông qua sự tiến bộ của khoa học kỹ thuật vẫn chưa biết rõ, hay nói chính xác hơn là vẫn chưa chứng minh được bằng phương thức khoa học khách quan ai là tác nhân thực sự của các sản phẩm khoa học kỹ thuật tân tiến đó: tâm trí hay não bộ hay cả hai?
