Bé Viết Văn Việt . Bài dự thi số 269 Bis
QUILT EXPLANATION
On my quilt, you see two flags on the top and bottom corner. These two flags represent me as an Asian American. I am Vietnamese and was born in an American country. I am a full-blooded Vietnamese. My parents are also pure Vietnamese.
The two landscapes of Vietnam near the top of my quilt repesent my mom and dad’s native land. That was where my parents grew up as a child. My dad grew up in a place called Ben Tre. Ben Tre is famous for their coconut trees and its products, such as coconut candy. My mom’s home land is in Nha Be. Nha Be is known for its ever-stretching and beautiful river. The pictures are near the top because that represents how I am here today. Those places kind of represent my second homes.
Somehow, I feel like a part of me belongs in those places. Therefore, one day, I would like to travel and visit my parent’ hometown. The picture of the beach with the palm tree represents my passion to go to the beach. I just think that it is the most beautiful and fun place to “hang around” with my friends or family. Also, the beach reminds me of my wonderful memories with my friends from tutoring over the summer.
The picture of my family in the center of my quilt represents me the most. I would never be anything without them. They will always be there to support me and listen to my problems. My family is also like teachers to me. They tell me things that I can never learn in school. My family is like my friends, only blood-related. The bed represents my lazy summer/ weekend days. I love to sleep because I love what goes on in my dreams, all the madness and craziness. I LOVE to sleep in when there’s no school. It also represents that I am laidback and usually calm.
The pharmacist on the top left corner represents my future career job. I want to be a pharmacist because it seems easier than being a doctor or lawyer. Also, I heard from my parents that a pharmacist makes quite a lot of money. But I am still not exactly sure about what I want to be when I grow up.
The picture of my nieces and nephews are the “babie” of the family. They bring fun and a smile to everyone in my family. I enjoy talking to them and listening to them talk back with their cute way of saying things.
Next to that picture is a picture of a throne and crown. The throne and the crown represent how I got my last name, Le. My last name comes from a Vietnamese emperor named Le Dai Hanh. He was able to defeat a small country called “Chiem Thanh” and made it a part of Vietnam. The Le dynasty was able to go on for 3 generations. Then, I have a picture of an airplane. This picture represents that I love to travel to different places. I love to learn about the new environment and look at beautiful landscapes. So far, my mom has promised to take me someplace out of the state every year for summer. One day, I would like to fly to Hawaii or Florida and enjoy their tropical atmosphere. Last but not least, is the chocolate bar. This is a symbol for my love of food. I love to eat, from healthy to junk. I love to eat both Vietnamese cuisine and American food. Whether it’s a simple snack bag to a plate of thick and juicy steak, I still love it. The only foods that I dislike are broccoli, mushrooms, weird types of meat (snake, turtle, dog, cat, mouse, ect…), raw carrots, olives and food with raw meat such as sushi.
