Everyday until now, I was told about the poor and sick people around the world but never actually witnessed it. Until today, I went back to my parent’s homeland Viet Nam and visited a cancer hospital called The Nguyen Van Hoc Hospital.
Many kind hearted people in the US assisted me by making donations to give to the cancer patients.
We managed to split all the donations evenly upon the patients. We managed to give each patient 100,000 VD or $5 US dollars. Although this may seem little to us, it may seem like a lot to the patients. When we first entered I saw a sign that said: “welcome to the hospital.” Then I noticed a sign right next to that said: “Smoking can cause lung cancer”. Suprisingly, as we approached, doctors and staff members smoking by the sign (?). I thought that was pretty ironic. When got in, I started to see poverty. All of them were sick and poor, and were also suffering from pain and hunger. Most of them have no shoes and worn out clothes. Some patients have no eyes after surgery and most patients have tumors in there body. Some patients are abnormally skinny and others need tube feeding. Most patients lose hair after radiation and chemotherapy. We came not just to give money and visit them, but give them love and hope. My dad and I were led down a crowded hospital and into an even more crowded room. Some kids have to sleep in halls because there aren’t enough beds. Some kids have to sleep under the beds to reserve space. In the six rooms we visited there were twelve kids but only six beds. While we were going room to room, other patients followed me seeing I had money. Coming out of room four, I saw a boy who just removed his eye cover and all I saw were enormous but no eyes. When we were heading out of the hospital and to my dad’s motorcycle, people persistently asked my dad for money. But we only had enough money for parking. On the way home, I realized how much luckier and easier we have it. I learned a lesson how to appreciate life. I also appreciate everybody’s help. I couldn’t have it done this without everybody.
Please continue to support me in the future for charity events. A big thank you to Ms. Mimi, Ms. Nga, Aunt Lệ, Aunt Trang, Uncle Phong, Ms. Tâm, Ms. Tâm’s sister, my Dad, my Mom, my Grandparents and myself.
Sincerely yours,
Christopher Nguyen
