A few years ago, a Vietnamese pharmacy student, a mature man, choked his mother to dealth because he was depressed everyday. The main cause of depression was his mom who scolded and yelled at him almost every day just because he did not go to the medical school to be a doctor, not pharmacist, so she could brag with her friends. She told him that she was ashamed because her friend’s kids are doctors or would-be doctors. She represents the ugliness of our culture: bragging, envying, and money-driven. As a younger generation Vietnamese, we should not follow their path. This is also the message I would like us, younger generation, to get.
Vietnam today lies in the bottom of human civilization and the ugly side of Vietnamese culture plays a big role in getting our people there.
