Dear Mr. Hood,
Did you know it was because of you that I had to do a lot of homework (from notes, standard reviews, to review/writing activities)? It was because of your class that I got some not-so-pretty looking scores. And it was also because of your class that I struggled to get straight As…
But did you know it was also your class that opened my eyes to the world? Im going to be honest; before my seventh grade year (aka History class with Mr. Hood), I kind of thought the world revolved around me. I thought “Who cares History? Its just some past.”… But, boy was I wrong. The thing is we learn from our past. Everything in the past builds us into the person we are today. I realized that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.s famous “I Have A Dream” speech was merely 50 years ago, meaning racial equality is still new. That it might not even be equal in some parts of the world today. (Yes, I did know some of this stuff before, but it never really hit me hard and made me think for a while.) I realize that all this was not all “once upon a time”. America, this country weve been living in is only 240 years old! I took everything for granted before, like women equality and human rights. Because that was how it was when I was born. Because my whole existence has been placed in the very lucky time era that allows these standards.
You have made the lessons of other people I couldve never related to, come alive and blend into my life somehow…
You mightve noticed me doodling all over my notes or writing notes that actually werent “notes-notes” from time to time in your classes the past 2 years. It wasnt because I thought your class was boring. I enjoy writing stories and drawing so I find bits and remnants of inspiration and ideas through what we learn. (I think I mightve written the best stories in your class!). You dont know how many times I talk about the History lessons I learn in your class to my parents around the dinner table at night. (My favorite one has got to be the Renaissance!). My facts mightve not been 100% right, but I could grasp on the idea. And isnt that what its really about? So even though I might not have known my actual book stuff A+ well, I did learn a lot of other significant things in life. And even though I might not have been your best student (grades-wise), youll always be one of my favorite teachers! Im so sorry for making you read all the way up here. I just wanted to let you know your great impact on my life before I leave.
Anyways, I hope you have fantastic summer! Thank you for being such a memorable history teacher throughout my middle school career!;-)
